In the private sector, Sandy has served as President of a residential and commercial development company. He was President of a consulting firm representing national financial service and reinsurance brokerage companies as well as domestic and national insurance companies. sectors, focuses on insurance and regulatory matters, transactions, company creation, capital formation, banking and financial services, and environmental and marine resource issues.
From 1988-1998, Sandy was elected to serve in the Florida House of Representatives representing parts of Pinellas, Hillsborough, and Pasco counties. While in the House he chaired several key committees and was a prime sponsor of Preservation 2000, which later was reenacted as Florida Forever. He was active in other environmental efforts including Everglades Restoration, the merger of Florida Department of Natural Resources with Florida Department of Environmental Protection, and legislation creating the current Fish and Wildlife Commission and Tampa Bay Water. He was a gubernatorial appointee to the Florida Marine Fisheries Commission, upon which he served as Vice Chairman.
Sandy continues to serve on multiple boards and advisory councils. He currently is a board member of the Federal Alliance for Safe Home (FLASH). He is the past Chairman and Vice Chairman of Babcock Ranch, Inc., a not-for-profit corporation created by the State of Florida to oversee a 73,000 acre parcel of land the State purchased in conjunction with Lee and Charlotte Counties to preserve as a working ranch and environmental center. He is also active with the Coastal Conservation Association, a non-profit organization that represents the recreational fishing interest and the enhancement of marine resources and habits.
Sandy earned his Bachelor’s degree from Middle Tennessee State University. He and his wife, Robin, reside in Tallahassee, Florida. Collectively they have 4 children and 5 grandchildren.
